Argyll Western Hotel Overview
You know, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Argyll Western Hotel – honestly, the name made me think it might be some dated chain property. But there’s something genuinely charming about this 3-star spot that surprised me. It’s got that authentic Scottish hospitality thing down without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The lobby has this lived-in feel with those deep leather chairs that actually look comfortable (and are), plus the staff seemed to remember my name by the second day, which is pretty rare these days.
What really won me over was how the place feels properly Scottish without being all tartan-and-bagpipes touristy about it. The common areas have these massive windows that let in tons of natural light – crucial during those short winter days up here. I mean, the building itself has some character to it, though I’ll be honest, my room was pretty standard. Nothing fancy, but everything worked and the bed was surprisingly comfortable. The heating actually keeps up with the Scottish weather, which trust me, isn’t always a given in older properties. There’s this great little spot near the front entrance where you can sit with a coffee in the morning and watch the town wake up – I found myself doing that more than I expected.
The thing about staying here is that it sits right in the heart of things without being on some crazy busy street where you can’t sleep. I could walk to most of what I wanted to see, and parking wasn’t the nightmare it can be in some Scottish towns. The breakfast room gets pretty lively around 8 AM, but in a good way – lots of families and couples planning their day trips. Actually, that’s probably what I’d recommend this place for most: it’s a solid base if you’re exploring the area. The 7.5 rating feels about right to me – not perfect, but definitely above average, and the price point makes sense for what you get. Plus, the front desk folks know their stuff about local attractions and actually seem to enjoy helping out with recommendations.
