Bright Room Overview
Look, I’ll be honest with you – Bright Room is one of those places that completely catches you off guard. When I first walked down Braid Street in the Merchant City area, I almost missed it entirely. It’s tucked away in this converted Victorian building that doesn’t scream “hotel” from the outside, which honestly turned out to be part of its charm. The whole neighborhood has this gritty-meets-artsy vibe that feels authentically Glasgow – you know, the kind of area where you’ll find proper coffee shops next to vintage record stores and the occasional mural that makes you stop and stare.
The thing about Bright Room is that it’s completely unpredictable, and I mean that in both good and… well, interesting ways. They don’t have an official star rating because they’re doing their own thing entirely – it’s more like staying in someone’s really creative friend’s apartment than a traditional hotel. My room had these massive windows (hence the name, I suppose) that flooded the space with natural light, exposed brick walls that felt genuinely historic rather than fake-rustic, and furniture that looked like it was carefully collected from various decades. The bathroom was compact but surprisingly well-designed, though I should mention the water pressure was a bit temperamental – not terrible, just something to manage your expectations around. What really struck me was how quiet it was at night, despite being right in the city center. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the Gallery of Modern Art and all the action on Buchanan Street, but somehow Braid Street feels like this peaceful pocket.
Actually, that location thing is worth talking about more because it’s genuinely brilliant if you want to experience Glasgow like someone who actually lives here. You can walk to Central Station in about ten minutes, Queen Street Station is even closer, and honestly, everything worth seeing is within walking distance. The staff – and there aren’t many of them, it’s a small operation – actually know the area and will point you toward places that aren’t just tourist traps. They told me about this incredible Lebanese place around the corner that I never would have found otherwise. The whole experience feels more like a local recommendation than a corporate hotel stay, which I realize might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it worked for me. Yes, the service can be a bit informal and you might wait longer for fresh towels than you would at a chain hotel, but there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses more on character than checking all the standard hospitality boxes. If you’re looking for predictable luxury, this probably isn’t your spot – but if you want to stay somewhere with genuine personality in the heart of Glasgow’s most interesting neighborhood, Bright Room delivers something you won’t find anywhere else.

Fair – Bezděk from Czech Republic – May 18, 2025 (5/10)
