City Centre Room Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first walked into City Centre Room on New City Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name’s pretty straightforward, almost understated, but that actually turns out to be part of its charm. This isn’t your typical star-rated chain hotel (they don’t even bother with official ratings), and honestly, that’s exactly why it works so well.

The building itself has this wonderful industrial-meets-cozy vibe that you see a lot in Glasgow these days – exposed brick walls mixed with carefully chosen vintage furniture that doesn’t feel like it’s trying too hard. You know what I mean? It’s the kind of place where every room feels deliberately different, like someone actually thought about the layout instead of just copying and pasting the same setup fifty times. I stayed in a room on the second floor that had these massive windows overlooking the street, and while New City Road isn’t exactly quiet (you’ll hear some traffic, especially during morning rush), there’s something energizing about being right in the thick of things. The beds are proper comfortable too – none of that rock-hard hotel mattress nonsense.

What really got me though was how the staff seemed to actually know the area. When I asked about getting to the west end, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward a taxi – he walked me outside and showed me the exact bus stop, mentioned which buses run late, even warned me about the roadworks near Byres Road that week. That’s the kind of local insight you just don’t get at the big chain places. The whole check-in process was refreshingly laid-back too, more like visiting a friend’s well-organized flat than dealing with hotel bureaucracy. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of town (street parking’s mostly residents-only during the day), but they’ve got arrangements with a car park about two minutes’ walk away – not free, but not extortionate either. Location-wise, you’re genuinely well-placed here. It’s maybe a fifteen-minute walk to George Square if you’re feeling energetic, or you can hop on the subway system pretty easily. The Merchant City’s practically on your doorstep, which means decent restaurants and pubs without having to trek across town. I actually ended up at this brilliant little Italian place just around the corner that I never would have found if I’d stayed somewhere more touristy.
