The rooms themselves are what you’d expect for a solid mid-range place, nothing fancy but everything works properly (which, let’s be honest, is sometimes asking a lot these days). The beds are actually comfortable – not too soft, not too firm – and I slept surprisingly well considering I’m usually pretty sensitive to street noise.

What really won me over, though, was the attention to those little details that make you feel like someone’s actually thinking about the guest experience. The shower had proper water pressure, the Wi-Fi didn’t cut out every five minutes, and there were enough outlets near the bed that I didn’t have to choose between charging my phone and using the bedside lamp. I mean, these sound like basic things, but you’d be amazed how many places get this wrong. The breakfast setup was pretty straightforward but done well – fresh coffee that didn’t taste like it had been sitting around for hours, and they had some proper Scottish options alongside the usual continental stuff. Plus, the whole place just felt clean without that overwhelming chemical smell some hotels seem to think equals cleanliness. With an 8.3 rating, I can see why people keep coming back – it’s one of those places that does the fundamentals really well without trying to be something it’s not.

  Fast access to city center with free parking directly in front of property. Shops close by for groceries. Property was big enough to fit our group of 6 but was a little cramped.

  Self catering, there was tea and coffee, but it would have been nice to have had some milk left in the fridge, as we did not arrive until 11.30pm and the shops were shut, so could not have a cup of tea.
  Shops 5 mins walk away and bus stops to get into the city very close by.
