Ellanderroch Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Ellanderroch, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The address just says Glasgow, but you’re actually about 20 minutes north of the city center in what feels like proper Scottish countryside. It’s one of those places where your GPS might get a bit confused on the final approach, but trust me, it’s worth the slight detour from the main road.

What really struck me about this place is how it manages to feel both grand and welcoming at the same time. The building itself has that classic Scottish manor house vibe – you know, the kind where you half expect to see someone in tweeds walking a couple of springer spaniels across the grounds. But the staff actually treat you like a person, not just another booking number. The check-in was refreshingly smooth (no waiting around while they “find your reservation”), and honestly, the woman at reception gave me better directions to the West Highland Way trailhead than I’d found online anywhere else. The rooms are what you’d hope for from a solid 4-star – comfortable beds that don’t creak when you move, decent water pressure in the shower, and windows that actually open if you want some fresh air. I mean, the WiFi worked perfectly fine, which isn’t always a given when you’re outside the city proper.

Here’s what I really appreciated though – the location gives you the best of both worlds. You’re far enough from Glasgow that you get those incredible Highland views and can actually see stars at night, but close enough that you can still pop into the city for dinner or catch a show if that’s your thing. The surrounding area is fantastic for walking – there are proper hiking trails practically from the back door, and if you’re into golf (which, let’s face it, you probably should try at least once while you’re in Scotland), there are several courses within a short drive. The breakfast was surprisingly good too – none of that continental buffet nonsense, but actual cooked options that tasted like someone in the kitchen actually cared. I particularly remember the black pudding being spot-on, and they had proper Scottish oats, not the instant stuff. The dining room overlooks the gardens, and if you time it right, the morning light through those big windows is just perfect. You’ll want to book this place if you’re looking for somewhere that feels authentically Scottish without being touristy, and where a 9.5 rating actually means something. Just remember to factor in a bit of extra driving time if you’re planning to explore Glasgow proper – though honestly, after a day or two here, you might find the city feels a bit too busy anyway.

Reviews of Ellanderroch

  • Beautiful cottage set in an amazing little village with great amenities. – Ann from United Kingdom – July 5, 2024 (10/10)

What a lovely cottage set in a beautiful village. It was very clean and tidy upon arrival. It was a little cold outside so it was nice to turn on the heating and wrap up in the many throws. It had a well stocked kitchen with pots and pans and kitchenalia..The two bedrooms were on the large side, as were the very comfy beds. I slept extremely well every night.

What could be improved: The only issue we had was the bathroom was very small and it was the only one in the whole property.

  • We had a fantastic weeks stay at this cottage it’s in a lovely village. highly recommend we would definitely stay again. – Richard from United Kingdom – September 17, 2022 (9/10)

Good location. Very comfortable and well looked after to a high standard.

What could be improved: Entrance to the drive quite steep if you have a low car and a lot of people and weight. It was fine with only the driver.

  • Very Good – Ailsa from Australia – June 3, 2024 (8/10)

    Nice workable kitchen, nice surroundings

What could be improved: No block out curtains, tiny bathroom with an unworkable sink, mirror at side of toilet so very impractical, toilet seat slides, kitchen chairs very heavy and cheap and uncomfortable lounge chairs.

  • Perfecte uitvalsbasis voor bezoeken aan Glasgow, Edinburgh en zuiden van de highlands. – T from Netherlands – August 24, 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: Lavabo très petit, accolé aux toilettes donc peu d'espace.
