Look, I’ll be honest with you – Glasgow House isn’t going to win any awards for luxury, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need. This three-star spot sits right in the heart of Glasgow, and while the 6.1 rating might make you pause, hear me out on this one. I’ve stayed here twice now, and there’s something refreshingly no-nonsense about the place that actually works in its favor.

The building itself has that solid Scottish character you’d expect – thick stone walls that keep the street noise down (which is honestly a blessing if you’re anywhere near the city center). My room was, well, functional is probably the kindest way to put it. The carpets have definitely seen better days, and the bathroom could use some updating, but everything worked fine and the bed was surprisingly comfortable. You know what really impressed me though? The staff actually seemed to care. The woman at reception – I think her name was Margaret – knew the area inside and out and gave me directions to this brilliant little pub around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise.

What Glasgow House lacks in polish, it makes up for in location and value. You’re walking distance from pretty much everything worth seeing, and the breakfast – while nothing fancy – is proper Scottish fare that’ll keep you going until dinner. I mean, you’re not getting smoked salmon and champagne, but the porridge was creamy, the bacon was crispy, and they didn’t skimp on portions. The common areas feel a bit dated (think floral wallpaper and furniture from the ’90s), but they’re clean and there’s usually a good mix of travelers hanging about if you’re in the mood to chat. Just don’t expect lightning-fast WiFi in your room – it works fine in the lobby, but upstairs can be hit or miss. For what you’re paying though, especially during festival season when everything else is charging astronomical rates, Glasgow House delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense.

  The property’s location is very close to the university and also close to grocery stores and eateries. It’s all within a couple of minutes walk. The hotel was well maintained though it was an old property. The staff is very helpful and try to accommodate your requests. They also maintain the hotel very well. My room was spotless and I liked it. The staff helped me with my check in and check out very smoothly. I would certainly recommend it.
