Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard the name Holiday Inn Express – Glasgow – City Ctr Riverside, an IHG Hotel, I rolled my eyes a bit. That’s quite a mouthful, right? But you know what, sometimes the places with the longest names actually surprise you, and this one definitely did.

The thing about this spot is its location along the Clyde – and I mean, you’re literally steps away from the river. When I stayed there last spring, I could hear the water from my room on the third floor, which was oddly soothing after spending days walking around Glasgow’s busy city center. The building itself sits in this interesting pocket where you’ve got the modern riverside developments mixing with older Glasgow architecture, so there’s always something to look at when you’re wandering back after dinner. What really struck me was how the hotel manages to feel like it’s right in the thick of things without being overwhelmed by traffic noise – honestly, I was expecting way more street sounds given how central it is.

The rooms are… well, they’re Holiday Inn Express rooms, so you know what you’re getting – clean, efficient, nothing fancy but everything works. The beds are actually pretty comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the shower pressure was solid, which matters more than people admit when you’re doing a lot of walking around the city. I appreciated the little things too – decent lighting for reading, enough outlets for all your devices, and the air conditioning actually cooled the room down properly during that weird heat wave Glasgow had. The breakfast situation is typical HIE fare, but they do it well – hot coffee, fresh fruit, and enough variety that you won’t get bored if you’re staying multiple nights. I mean, it’s not going to win any culinary awards, but it gets you fueled up for the day without having to hunt down a café first thing in the morning.

What I really loved was how easy it made exploring the city center. You can walk to the Merchant City area in about ten minutes, catch a show at one of the theaters, grab dinner somewhere decent, and stumble back without needing to figure out late-night transport. The staff seemed to actually know the area too – the guy at the front desk gave me solid recommendations for pubs that weren’t just tourist traps, and the housekeeping team was genuinely friendly without being overly chatty. It’s that sweet spot of professional but not stuffy, you know? For a three-star place with an 8.2 rating, it delivers exactly what it promises – a comfortable base in a great location where you can focus on enjoying Glasgow instead of worrying about your accommodation. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  The hotel is in the absolute perfect location for us, when we come to Glasgow to attend a charity event at the Clutha, just across the road! It also has wonderful river views, from the end of the corridors. We have come back for several years, now.
  The rooms are always spacious, lovely comfy kingsize bed, great shower room.
  Breakfast options are fabulous, and the staff are always friendly and helpful.
