Holiday Inn Express – Glasgow – City Ctr Riverside, an IHG Hotel Overview
First Impressions
The Holiday Inn Express – Glasgow – City Ctr Riverside, an IHG Hotel sits right on Stockwell Street, and honestly, you can’t ask for a better spot in Glasgow. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the River Clyde and walking distance to pretty much everything that matters in the city center. It’s one of those three-star hotels that doesn’t try to be fancy but gets the fundamentals absolutely right — which, let’s be honest, is exactly what you want when you’re exploring a city like this.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what I love about this spot — you can walk to Glasgow Central Station in about five minutes, which is a game-changer if you’re arriving by train or planning day trips. The Merchant City area is right there too, so you’ve got all those great pubs and restaurants within easy reach. I’ve stayed in hotels that claim to be “centrally located” but then you’re stuck taking taxis everywhere. Not here. You know what really impressed me? Couples consistently rate the location 9.0 out of 10, and after spending time there, I totally get why.
The Room Experience
The room itself is exactly what you’d expect from Holiday Inn Express — clean, modern, and surprisingly comfortable. Actually, let me tell you about those beds because they’re genuinely excellent. I’m usually pretty picky about hotel mattresses, but I slept really well here. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re smartly designed with everything you need and nothing you don’t. There’s decent storage space, a good shower, and — this matters more than you’d think — proper blackout curtains that actually work.
Breakfast Worth Getting Up For
The continental buffet breakfast is solid — not groundbreaking, but it’ll definitely set you up for a day of sightseeing. They’ve got the usual suspects like pastries, cereals, and fruit, plus some hot options that change daily. I particularly appreciated that they keep it well-stocked even during busy periods. It’s served in a bright space that overlooks the street, so you can watch Glasgow wake up while you’re having your coffee. The coffee, by the way, is actually decent — not amazing, but much better than the instant stuff you sometimes get at budget hotels.
Why Guests Love It
Look, this isn’t a place that’s going to wow you with fancy amenities or over-the-top service, but it delivers exactly what it promises. The staff is friendly without being overly chatty, the building feels secure, and everything just works properly. What really sells it for me is that location — being able to walk to the Glasgow Cathedral, the Gallery of Modern Art, or just wander down to the Clyde without dealing with transport is worth its weight in gold. Plus, the value is genuinely good for what you’re getting in such a prime spot. It’s the kind of hotel where you spend your time exploring the city instead of hanging around the lobby, which is exactly how it should be.

The hotel is in the absolute perfect location for us, when we come to Glasgow to attend a charity event at the Clutha, just across the road! It also has wonderful river views, from the end of the corridors. We have come back for several years, now.
The rooms are always spacious, lovely comfy kingsize bed, great shower room.
