You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to The friendly place on St George’s Road – honestly, the name made it sound a bit too cutesy for my taste. But this little boutique spot completely won me over, and I mean that in the best possible way. It’s one of those places that doesn’t bother with official star ratings because, well, it’s doing its own thing entirely. The building itself has this lovely Victorian character that you’ll find all over this part of Glasgow, but inside they’ve managed to strike that perfect balance between honoring the original features and adding modern touches that actually make sense.

The staff here really live up to the hotel’s name – I’ve stayed in plenty of places where “friendly” is just marketing speak, but these folks genuinely seem to enjoy what they’re doing. When I checked in, the guy at reception spent a good ten minutes telling me about his favorite curry house just around the corner (which, by the way, was absolutely spot on). The rooms have this cozy, almost residential feel that makes you forget you’re in a hotel. Mine had these gorgeous high ceilings and original moldings, plus a bathroom that was surprisingly spacious for a Victorian conversion. The bed was one of those where you actually sleep through the night instead of tossing around – something I definitely don’t take for granted when I’m traveling.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned here. St George’s Road puts you right in the thick of things without the tourist crowds that swarm around George Square. The West End is an easy walk, and honestly, some of Glasgow’s best pubs and restaurants are practically on your doorstep. I loved being able to wander down to the river or pop over to Kelvingrove Park when I needed a break from the city buzz. Parking can be a bit tricky on the street (typical Glasgow), but they’ve got arrangements with a nearby car park that won’t break the bank. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the walls are a bit thin – not terrible, but you might hear your neighbors if they’re having a particularly animated conversation. That said, the neighborhood quiets down nicely in the evenings, so it’s not like you’re dealing with constant street noise. This place has that rare quality where it feels genuinely local rather than designed for tourists, which is probably why I keep recommending it to friends heading to Glasgow. It’s got character without being gimmicky, comfort without being stuffy, and staff who actually seem to care about whether you have a good time in their city.
