First Impressions

Walking up to Woodside room on Raglan Street, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical Glasgow hotel. It’s tucked into a quieter part of the city center, away from the main tourist hustle but still close enough that you can hear the distant hum of Sauchiehall Street. The building has that solid Victorian character you find all over this part of Glasgow — honestly, it feels more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place than checking into a standard four-star property. There’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole setup that I found quite appealing.

Location & Getting Around

The Raglan Street location is actually pretty clever when you think about it. You’re essentially in the heart of Glasgow’s cultural quarter — the Royal Conservatoire is practically next door, and you can walk to both the Theatre Royal and the CCA in about five minutes. What really sold me on the spot, though, was how easy it makes getting around the rest of the city. Cowcaddens subway station is close by, which connects you directly to the West End if you want to explore Byres Road or the university area. Plus, and this is huge for Glasgow, there’s free parking on site — you know how rare that is in the city center.

The Room Experience

The room itself strikes that sweet spot between comfortable and characterful. It’s clear they’ve put thought into the details without going overboard — good lighting for actually reading, proper blackout curtains (essential for those bright Scottish summer evenings), and a bathroom that’s been updated but keeps some of the building’s original charm. I mean, you’re not getting a massive space here, but everything feels well-considered. The bed was genuinely comfortable, and there’s enough storage that you don’t feel like you’re living out of a suitcase for your entire stay.

Neighborhood Charm

What I really appreciated was how this area comes alive in the evenings. During the day, Raglan Street is fairly quiet — mostly locals going about their business — but once the theaters and music venues get going, there’s this lovely energy that builds up around here. You’ll find yourself walking past students from the Conservatoire heading to performances, and there are some genuinely good pubs within a stone’s throw that locals actually frequent. The whole Garnethill area has this slightly bohemian feel that’s quite different from the more commercial parts of Glasgow’s center, and staying here gives you a real taste of that.

Why Couples Love It

It makes perfect sense that couples rate this place so highly — there’s something inherently romantic about the setting and the neighborhood. You can easily spend an evening wandering through the nearby streets, maybe catch a show at one of the theaters, then come back to a peaceful spot that feels removed from the city’s busier areas. The free parking is a massive bonus if you’re planning day trips out to Loch Lomond or the Trossachs, and honestly, just not having to worry about where to leave your car in Glasgow is worth its weight in gold. It’s the kind of place where you can have a proper city break without feeling like you’re constantly battling crowds or noise.

  What could be improved: We booked late, but unfortunately the accommodation was very disappointing. We only had a mattress on the floor and a sofa bed that was impossible to sleep on. The kitchen and bathroom were not clean, and the key to enter the property did not work properly.
